House extension in Cachan
The project takes place in Cachan, in the south of Paris, in a long plot with a townhouse built in 1900. The owners want to create a kitchen, and a staircase leading to a garden below. The ambition of the project is to play with these two elements in order to allow a freedom and a malleability of uses.
Like a pavilion in the garden, a wooden structure draws a generous space, where the two levels of the house cross, as a threshold between the living spaces of the ground floor and the garden below. The project unfolds different layers to develop in depth, starting from the glazed façade. Facing the garden, the kitchen counter is lined with a library and a staircase. The room is free from its programmatic constraints, it is a space open to the contingency of its everyday life.
Two large sliding doors allow natural ventilation and offer different relations to the territory: one at the bottom of the staircase opens to the enclosed garden, while the other upstairs proposes to watch at the landscape from afar.
