Arne Jacobsen designed the building in 1965, but it was after his death (1971) that Dissing + Weitling took over the building and completed it in 1978. The construction phase began with the establishment of the money printing shop in the basement of the building.
The architecture of the building follows the formal language of functionalism without frills and ornaments.
The first floor serves the building visually as a base, it is covered with grey marble slabs and has no windows. Above, the facade is a curtain wall in front of the load-bearing skeleton, which consists of marble slabs at both ends and tinted glass at the long sides. The facade is interrupted at the ends by several narrow, vertically running window strips. On the long sides, the glass surface is interrupted at equal intervals by black steel girders placed behind it.
