Primary school Ledegem
The new primary school is an addition to the school campus in the village of Ledegem and replaces a neglected building on roughly the same footprint. Safeguarding the outdoor playground for the children.
This modest yellow brick building refers to and complements the existing building. A new characteristic canopy connects the primary school with the existing kindergarten and defines the main entrance of the campus. It functions as a guiding element for the children, the staff and visitors, and has an important signal function along the street.
On the ground floor of the new primary school the multipurpose hall and the refectory can be combined as a large event space. The strong connection with the outdoor playground supports the functionality of these spaces. The reception is located strategically in the opposite corner of the building with a good overview of the covered playground and the street.
The building is organized around a central atrium with a spacious, inviting staircase. This element can function as tiered seating, classroom, meeting place, … and also provides the ground floor of more natural light.
On the first floor all the classes are positioned around the atrium The bright classrooms can be linked per two, which stimulates the mutual interaction between classes and gives the teachers several new options of teaching. The teacher room is located in the northwest corner with a strategic overview of the playground.
