The Berlin’s museumisland ist oneof the most interesting publicspaces in Europe. Site of reconstructions, contemporary interventions, events of all types. Besidesfrom Chipperfield’s intervention onNeues Museum, the Berliner Dome,Franco Stella’s Berliner Schloss, anotherimportant building is crossing thephase of “how to rebuild it”: Schinkel’sBauakademie. The idea of theproject is to recreate the Bauakademieas the “exclave” of the Museumisland, interpreting the building asthe monument of itself. The NewBauakademie will be reconstructedwith the original facades, but withthe provocation of using only onematerial, the brick, and walling upall the windows, in order to keepthe monumental interior as somethingto discover. Inside, in fact, the visitor will find a sort of inverteddome, reproposition of the classiclanguage of the building, as an uncoveredplaza inside the Bauakademie.Right in front of the Bauakademie, the landscape intervention involvesthe new castle and the old monumenton the river: a cut in the groundreveals their bases, introducing thevisitor to new functions, and leavingthe monument as a sort of platformin the river, an island with a privilegedpoint of view, right betweenthe Bauakademie and the BerlinerSchloss.
