The Moulinet project is located in a typical bricks and stones, Parisian apartment building. Originally planned with no bathroom nor kitchen, the two rooms were added years later and needed to be renovated.
In order to bring more space and light into the kitchen, the bathroom was relocated to another part of the flat, using a room which original purpose was storage. This arrangement allowed the kitchen to open towards the living room and therefore gain more light.
To both connect and differentiate the kitchen and the living room, a unique piece of furniture was designed. Bringing together multiple uses to the apartment – a bench for the digning table, a TV stand, a wardrobe, storage space- it also shapes the kitchen itself.
This piece of furniture serves two purposes: hosting most of the flat’s functions, but also resolving the geometrical oddities of the flat. . Indeed, the original plan showed a hexagonal hallway which can still be read from the wooden floor tiling. In order to connect the living room, the hallway and the kitchen, the bespoke furniture hides a partition section that was visually disrupting the comprehension of the space.
The piece of furniture is built in pine wood cleats and MDF. Due to its size, it had to be assembled inside the room.
This single simple intervention achieves an organized, yet open space.
