El jardín de las Maravillas
The Carmen is described by Seco de Lucena as a type of housing with an annexed green space: a garden, which constitues an extension of the house.
The Albaycín is known for its handicrafts and unique houses. In recent years, they have been abandoned because they don’t fit the needs of his owners. A craftwork center located in front of the Carmen doesn’t accomplish the demands of its occupants. Thay live far, the building is not easily accessible and the pedestrians can’t see their work.
It’s proposed a walk of discoveries opens to the Albaycín near to the ancient wall, created with the order of the debris forming the pavement of the time. On the other hand, in the Carmen there are 6 workshop-houses for artisans and their families, as an exhibition hall.
The architecture has an original shape, guided by the trees and the outline of the walls. All openings are orientated towards the singularities of the place: a tree, a fountain, a view.
Each house is special, however they have in common a central wooden furniture that orders each house. Extensible adaptable parts are extracted from it according to needs.
