Urban Clippings
The installation is on view through December 28, 2016 at the intersection of Jiancheng Park at Chengde Road and Nanjing West Road in Taipei.
Bureau Spectacular Founder and Partner Jimenez Lai was selected as one of four local and international artists to transform locations, objects, people and events in historical Taipei as part of this year’s Taipei Landscape Public Art Project.
His project, Urban Clippings (Mirror in the Sky) is a floating object that serves as a viewing device for the city. Like a kaleidoscope, the cutout windows around this object frame the surrounding urban environment, and reflect back to its interiority. Visitors are invited to duck into the cutouts on the bottom of the object, and view the floating clippings of the city. The image of the self is reflected into the environment nearby, infinitely repeating like a visual echo deep into an alternate reality. Seeing the unseen connects the city and the self and allows the viewer to discover halfforgotten treasures amidst the banal.
