Carlier Gebauer Art Gallery
The art gallery Carlier Gebauer was recently relocated in the large typography center originally built in the 1950s in West Berlin in the proximity of the Wall. For this project the idea of a grey cube, versus the canon of the abstract white cube for art galleries, was developed, inviting to integrate the peculiar existing structural features and geometry of the building within the gallery space. The conversion exposed the original bearing structure of the building and the interior large shed-hall, which was predestined to become the main exhibition space; a new geometry was juxtaposed to the existing to give a new hierarchic order of circulation, starting from an empty entrance capsule with a round wall to invite the visitors into the deeper exhibition space. The offices were set in the front, with the full glass window facade. The difference in floor height existing within the building was used to insert a large tribune staircase, utilised for opening events and art talks.
