Victoria & Albert Museum: Gallery 1A
Renovation of Museum gallery and entrance from South Kensington tube.
The underground entrance from South Kensington tube has been sensitively refurbished maintaining and enhancing key connections through the space by reinstating original features, and inserting contemporary design elements. The result is a distinctive and dramatic arrival space with a polychromatic marble floor and silver gilt ceiling. The space will help to visitors to orientate themselves and inspire them to explore the building.
The floor comprises sixteen different marbles in a pattern that radiates from the centre of the space. It is inspired by the many beautiful examples of stone and mosaic floors throughout the V&A galleries and the original Aston Webb entrance. It is the craft and artistry of these floors which help to define much of the museum’s character.
