SEMINAR BUILDING UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES KONSTANZ
irregular eyes The light gray cube with multiple identical openings is the first building block for the expansion of the University of Konstanz. In the future, five other buildings will be grouped around a common space. Located directly by Seerhein, the institute building is the prelude to the expansion of the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz.
The four-storey building comprises seminar rooms and offices in a compact volume. Two huge openings, located at the entrance and the riverside, define a covered entrance and a two-storey loggia overlooking the Rhine. The powerful facade of visible concrete with integrated windows appears both playful and severe. From a distance it resembles a cube with irregular eyes. Coming closer, the concrete joints and the traces of the formwork shocks emerge on the smooth concrete walls. The surfaces of the cube are perforated irregularly by the window cavities.
The rugged beauty of the visible concrete is also evident in the large apertures of the entrance and waterside loggia. Here one can see and feel the structural dimensions of the load-bearing concrete envelope. The open loggias are a discreet reference to the internal use of the building, and serve to expand and illuminate the interior.
