Uruguai’s project took place in an old building whose spaces where all connected with each other, reminding a palatial architectural interior organization. There were also other challenges in this project such as: the original bathroom was located in the exterior of the house and the courtyard was covered by a dense slab of reinforced concrete, removing the light and the salubrity needed in the interior space.
Nevertheless, since the beginning there was a strong desire of keeping some of the original materials, such as the floor tiles, the stone used in the kitchen’s chimney, and last but not least, the high ceilings.
In the new proposal the bedrooms open to the courtyard, having more privacy in its interior space. On the other hand, the kitchen is relocated from its original place, creating a strong communication with the living room. This allowed designing a second bathroom and a small closet giving more space to one of the previous bedrooms. The initial bathroom was kept in its original place but at this time belonging to the interior space of the house, not presenting itself as a solitary room.
The exterior space was also changed; the concrete slab was removed, allowing the courtyard to win more space and privacy.
