A only six-meter-wide but eighteen-meter high residential building in the center of Berlin
In Berlin Mitte on the Friedrichswerder about 50 parcels for small individual town houses were developed. In the development plan the building depth is limited to 14 Meters and the number of floors is limited to five. But there is no height limitation and there are no specifications for use
The house in the Alte Leipziger Straße is occupied by three generations of a family, in part constantly, in some cases only temporarily, and by some family members as a work place.
The building has five full floors - ground floor and four upper floors - with a gallery level and a basement. The permitted building depth of 14 meters is utilized. Within the construction area, the exterior walls are recessed inwards, on the road side and on the garden side, behind a building-high loggia zone.
On the first floor there is a granny flat. The small apartment and his staircase forms a room sequence that is completely separeted from the rest of the building. According to the disposition of an "upwards" open space sequence, all other stairs are open to the living and working areas.
The vertical "rue interieure" begins on the ground floor in a two-storey room, which serves the stay, the cooking, the food and as meeting place. On the second floor there are bedrooms. On the upper floor are workrooms and on the fourth floor a reading room and an other small apartment separated by an atrium. The roof terrace, which is above the reading room, offers a view of the rooftops of the city.
