Development and Computing Resource Center
A neighborhood was created in response to the recurring flooding of the Paraguay River´s banks every 10 years, one of the biggest crisis in the metropolitan area of Asunción. Tired of the ongoing situation this neighborhood decides to search for other lands in the outskirts of the city where they could re-start their history with the help of the UNIPAR Association.
The relocation of the neighborhood started with 12 families. Nowadays the neighborhood is made up of more than 60 families.
During this process of conformation, communitarian infrastructure like schools and health centers were implemented. Also back then, an existing shed was used as a venue for a social program of community bakery and later a paper envelope ensemble took place there too, but both efforts ended up failing.
After a few year of the shed being abandoned, the UNIPAR Association along with the “San Miguel” community decided to use it to create a space called “Development and Computing Resource Center” (CRID). This space would become the place of generation of knowledge in the neighborhood.
This program aspired to create a library, a reading area, a computing area, and a place for manual labor and services.
The language seeks to generate an iconic space that considers the existing materials and recycles the maximum of them. The shed was intervened first by modifying its access to allow it to be directly connected to the neighborhood and not just the school. This connection was done by building a wall out of pre made brick panels that have a triple functionality: it works as structure, as a divisor between the different programs and their spaces and as bookshelves. The height of the shed was made use of to create a mezzanine for the computing area. Excavations were also done in order to even make more use of the height so the workshop areas could fit.
