ILUSTRARTE'16
Exhibit design for ILUSTRARTE'16, Biennial International Exhibition of Children’s Books Illustration, Lisbon
In this edition of Ilustrarte, as in the previous one, our proposal for the main exhibition is an installation of objects, a solution that ensures the integrity of the magnificent industrial space of the museum, accepting the existing peripheral walls as part of the new project.
Distributed throughout the exhibit space, these objects display the best of international contemporary illustration, in a layout where each visitor freely selects routes and relations, walking, getting closer, leaning over, making his own exhibition.
Each one of these objects is clearly the depiction of a house, a kind of assemblage between an ordinary table and the archetypical shape of a house, trying to achieve a childlike simplicity immediately recognizable.
The repetition of the houses - a total of 52 units – and the way it establishes relationships of proximity and distance creates a playful effect and emphasizes a narrative quality intrinsic to the theme of children’s illustration and its artistic creation.
In addition to the tectonic nature of this neighborhood of 150 illustrations, a sinuous platform works as a landscape intervention offering visitors a place to sit and read or just look and enjoy the surrounding exhibition.
