Ruins restoration of Church of Santa María
The ruins of Saint Mary's Church by Andrés de Vandelvira illustrate a perfect match between the Spanish Renaissance style architecture and patronage. Stemming from an urban humanist approach, these ruins represent an exposition between architecture and patronage, as well as an ideal fusion between the building and the surrounding landscape in the Cerezuelo River Valley.
The restoration of the ruins provides a new venue for research endeavors, namely a historical and artistic study, an intervention and a study of archaeological materials. In addition, it lies the foundations for a sound scientific methodology.
The idea behind this project is to conserve the monument and to maintain its current use while complying with national and international directives and recommendations on cultural heritage and sustainable development. In order to achieve this, the following actions are put forward: restoration of the existing structure, improvement of livability and use of the space, organization of cultural visits for the proper contemplation of the ruins and design and supplying of equipment for events: music, theatre and dance.
The intervention in Saint Mary's Church represents a clear commitment to restoring the ruins of this unfinished temple while favoring their contemplation and the use of the space for the development of cultural activities that align with its heritage value.
