“Room with a View”
The project lies on the outskirts of the city center of Mechelen and occupies a three story family house with a pitched roof, on the edge of the river Dijle. The brief was to create rooms that fit the urban tissue. The house is enclosed from three sides, which only leaves the façade to create potential views on the old city skyline.
The new façade is a repetition of three stacked windows that provides the vistas for each level.
Materials and details:
Some of the existing elements of the 18th century house -the timber floors structure, stairs and brick walls- where blend in the new design.
The wooden window frames are accentuated/contrasting with the white plaster-finished façade.
Challenges
The challenge was to create comfortable living spaces in a narrow house divided in small rooms. Therefore we’ve opted to combine two main function per level: dining room vs kitchen, bed room vs bath room, living room vs working space. The former pitched roof is now a piano room with panoramic view.
