Europan Almere
The assignment was asking to design a building, which would first
serve as an eye-catching cultural pavilion and info-box at the central
part of a future housing district of Almere, and then later being sold
as a private villa and moved to the woods. The design of the building
departs form contradiction between these two seemingly incompatible
uses.
The building is a steel frame, which carries a box that can be placed
vertically (cultural pavilion) or horizontally (villa). Different
positions of the box produce different spatial scenarios: being
cultural pavilion, the building stands as a billboard, a giant pixel
screen with a void in the middle, serving as a stage for public
concerts and feasts; while moved to the woods it becomes a
patio-house, hidden in trees, someone’s Home Sweet Home.
